Leadership Luncheon: Investing in Young Women Leaders. Jehmu will provide the closing keynote speech at the annual Luncheon, empowering our young women to keep striving for their dreams and fulfilling their true potential. The Luncheon celebrates the Young Women Rock! mentees’ completion of the year-long leadership and personal development program through which they challenged stereotypes and social pressure, increased their self-confidence and learned to believe in themselves.

Jehmu’s official biography is provided below.

Jehmu Greene is an evangelist for disenfranchised and vulnerable communities. As President of JSG Strategies, Jehmu provides advocacy and media strategy consulting to campaigns, non-profits, corporations and celebrities. She also serves as a Fox News Contributor, where she provides analysis and opinion on political and social issues. A widely sought-after speaker, Jehmu’s commentary has been featured on The Daily Show and all major news networks and in print in The New York Times, Washington Post, USA Today and Essence Magazine.

Together with Jose Antonio Vargas, Alicia Menendez, and Jake Brewer, Jehmu co-founded Define American, a campaign to elevate the immigration reform conversation. Since it’s founding, the AP, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and USA Today have all shifted away from using the term “illegal” immigrant. Jehmu served as president of the Women’s Media Center where she worked with co-founders Jane Fonda, Robin Morgan, and Gloria Steinem to make women more visible and powerful in the media. She also previously served as President of Rock The Vote, where under her leadership young voters increased their turnout by 11%, the largest increase in between any two presidential campaigns ever recorded. She did it by growing Rock the Vote’s membership from 1,500 to over 1 million, registering over 2 million people, and engaging more than 200 celebrities and musicians in public education campaigns.

Jehmu began her career working in the fertile ground of Texas politics, including an early stint with Governor Ann Richards’ campaign in 1994. Since then, she has worked on more than twenty political campaigns at the local, state and national level, and served as an advisor and national surrogate for Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign. She was appointed by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to the United States National Commission for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Jehmu serves on the Board of Directors for the Planned Parenthood of NYC Action Fund and Petals n Belles, a New York based mentoring organization that teaches girls how to demand positive change in their lives. She has played key roles at both the Center for Policy Alternatives and the Democratic National Committee, where she ran the women’s office. She was recognized as one of Essence Magazine’s 40 Women Under 40 Shaping the World, and received the National Conference for Community and Justice’s Community Service Award, American Association of University Women’s Women of Distinction Award, and the National Council for Research on Women’s Women Making a Difference Award. Essence Magazine also named Greene one of the 35 Most Beautiful and Remarkable Women in the World.

Jehmu Greene was born in Washington, D.C. and grew up in Austin, Texas, where she attended the University of Texas at Austin. Politics, public policy, and activism have been a mainstay of her life. As the daughter of Liberian exiles, she has had first-hand knowledge of the realities of war and social disorder. By witnessing her family’s ordeal in Liberia, she gained a true sense of democracy and the freedoms that are inherent in it. On many days, she’d rather be singing country music from a stage in Nashville…a dream deferred.

On Sunday, May 19, 2013, Anika Rahman, CEO and President of Ms. Foundation for Women, will provide the opening keynote speech for the Young Women Rock! Leadership Luncheon: Investing in Young Women Leaders. The Luncheon celebrates the Young Women Rock! mentees’ completion of the year-long leadership and personal development program through which they challenged stereotypes and social pressure, increased their self-confidence and learned to believe in themselves.

Anika’s official biography is provided below.

Anika Rahman has a distinguished career as an advocate for women, particularly women’s health and human rights. Since February 2011, Ms. Rahman has served as president and CEO of the Ms. Foundation for Women, the leading national social justice foundation committed to building women’s power to ignite change.

For more than 35 years, the Ms. Foundation has delivered strategic support to trailblazing organizations that advance women’s solutions for change at decision-making tables across the nation. Under Ms. Rahman’s leadership, the Ms. Foundation continues to focus on helping improve the lives of women and their communities.

Prior to joining the Ms. Foundation, Ms. Rahman was the president of Americans for United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the world’s largest funder of reproductive health programs. In her six-year tenure at UNFPA, Ms. Rahman was instrumental in raising awareness of the global fight for women’s rights and of America’s critical role in it. She significantly grew the organization in size and scope, establishing and directing a national public affairs and communications strategy that included political advocacy and online engagement. In addition, she successfully mobilized to have UNFPA funding restored by President Obama.

Previously, Ms. Rahman was the founding director of the International Program at the Center for Reproductive Rights, where she created a legal framework for reproductive rights as human rights and helped women around the world fight for equality. As the visionary behind the Center’s global and U.S. foreign policy work, she developed the Center into the foremost legal organization in the world on international women’s reproductive rights. Among her achievements, Ms. Rahman led investigations into human rights violations, including sexual assault, coercive sterilization and abortion-related imprisonment, in Peru, Chile and Nepal. While at the Center, Ms. Rahman built her nonprofit management, policy and fundraising skills, sustaining the International Program’s annual budget of $2.25 million.

Earlier in her career, Ms. Rahman practiced law at Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton.
Ms. Rahman earned her Bachelor of Arts from Princeton’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs and her Juris Doctorate from Columbia Law School.

She is a lifetime member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Ms. Rahman received the 2002 Lawrence A. Wien Prize for Social Responsibility from Columbia Law School.
A prominent authority on social justice, Ms. Rahman speaks frequently on issues relating to women, including reproductive health, economic justice and violence against women. Her articles have been published in major academic and legal journals and media outlets. In 2000, she co-authored Female Genital Mutilation: A Practical Guide to Worldwide Laws and Policies.
