Young Women Rock! Has a Home at a Community Center in Brooklyn!
If Young Women Rock! did not exist, there would be nothing like it for the women and girls that is serves – having a home means we can reach an endless number of teen girls in the community.
Young Women Rock! was launched in January of 2012 at World Academy of Total Community Health High School in the East New York neighborhood of Brooklyn. The pilot was wildly successful and included 20 young women who remained dedicated to the program for the length of the school semester. After the Pilot Program was completed and deemed a success through the congratulations of MSNBC’s Melissa Harris-Perry, New York State Senator Velmanette Montgomery, Dr. Brenda Greene and countless other members of the community, we had requests from girls who did not attend WATCH High School to join the program.
Young Women Rock! provides teenage girls in a neighborhood, where over 30% of the population lives below the poverty line, with the only safe space dedicated entirely to them to discuss issues pertinent to their health, wellbeing and success. They are paired with their own mentor (college student or graduate), who encourages their self-confidence, ambition and goals while helping them to combat negative societal pressures and stereotypes. To accommodate any young woman aged 14 – 18 in the neighborhood, we understand we had to transplant our program from the high school to a community center nearby. Having a home at the community center means that not only can YWR! run the full length of the academic year, but our program will also gain more independence and have the possibility to hold activities during the summer months when students are out of school for over 12 weeks.
TODAY WE ARE THRILLED TO ANNOUNCE that the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) has accepted our program into the Seth Low Community Center! This is a step which will allow us to recruit 14-18 year old girls from the community regardless of which high school they attend, and it will also allow us to easily expand to other centers in Brooklyn and to other boroughs in the next couple of years!
