Applications Open: Young Women Rock! Youth Mentor – Fall 2013/Spring 2014
We are excited to invite female college students and young professionals (ages 18 to 30) in the New York tri-state area to become youth mentors in the exciting year-long Young Women Rock! Leadership Program. This will be our third year of YWR! and we are looking forward to another great year of empowering teenage girls in the Brooklyn community!
About the Program
The Young Women Rock! Mentorship Program is dedicated to strengthening the lives and communities of young women in urban neighborhoods through a curriculum based, group, and one-on-one mentorship program for high schoolers that includes weekly sessions and monthly cultural outings.
YWR! empowers girls through mentorship, building their self-confidence and challenging them to discover and fulfill their potential.
The Role of a Mentor
Mentors assume a number of different roles during the course of a mentoring relationship, but successful mentors also share the same basic qualities:
• A sincere desire to be involved with a young person
• Respect for young people
• Active listener
• See solutions and opportunities
• Be flexible and open
• Be committed and available
MENTOR APPLICATION GUIDELINES
The Young Women Rock! Mentorship Program is open to female candidates between the ages of 18 and 30 living in New York City. The program is designed for individuals who are willing to devote a considerable amount of energy and reflection to the process of community building and empowerment through mentorship. You must be able to commute to Brownsville, Brooklyn (L, 3 trains) and dedicate Thursdays from 3:30 – 6:00 p.m. to the program.
If accepted into the program, mentors will be required to undergo a background check, as well as participate in a training session.
In order to apply for the program, candidates must submit the following materials:
•A completed application form;
•Email a one-page resume to info[at]womenworldwideinitiative.org with the subject, “YWR! Mentor Application FY2013 – [Your Full Name].”
The selection committee will review applications while focusing on the following:
•An appreciation and understanding of the value of the Young Women Rock! Program;
•A demonstrated interest in mentorship and youth/community engagement;
•The ability and commitment to complete the program
Your application should reflect your interest in the program and community engagement; how you would connect your life and academic experience to your participation in this program; what you hope to gain from this experience, particularly with regard to your future endeavors and career plans; and what you can contribute to the Young Women Rock! Team.
THE DEADLINE TO APPLY FOR THE 2013-2014 EXPERIENCE IS SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 22ND at 11:59pm EST. Exceptional applicants will be invited for an interview. Approximately twenty candidates will be selected to participate in the program.
